Pirates and Enslaved Africans: Extended Use of Slave Ship Artifacts

Scholars speculate about the fates of these Africans and Thache’s extent of involvement in the slave trade. Questions abound whether La Concorde enslaved captives joined the pirate crew or were resold in the West Indies or the colonies. Prior to activities in piracy, Thache served aboard a vessel during the Atlantic slave trade, so it is likely he was aware of value and markets for enslaved Africans (Tattersfield, 2011, pp. 218–221). Equally interesting, yet unconfirmed and controversial conclusions, are that Thache was continuing to conduct local small-scale slave trade along the eastern seaboard and especially in North Carolina where colonial records note that convenient deep-water ports were lacking for large slave ships. His activities were clandestinely or tacitly endorsed by Governor Edenton and facilitated by customs official Tobias Knight accused of receiving pirated cargo items and enslaved men.At a Court of Admiralty Continued and held at the Capital the 13th day of March 1718 Whereas it has appeared to this Court Mr Tobias Knight Secty of North Carolina hath given Just Cause to suspect his being privy to the Piracys com̄itted by Edward Thache and his Crew and hath received and Concealed the Effects by them piratically taken whereby he is become an accessary.
